Care and maintenance of your Hybrideck composite decking products

Composite decking manufacturers recommend the following options for keeping your decking at its best. Composite decking (if cared for) can provide a lifetime of enjoyable use, even when used as composite pool decking. As your decking suppliers, Hybrideck can provide additional advice or check our FAQs page for more details.

General cleaning of composite decking

Keep it clean and your Hybrideck with reward you with many years of low maintenance pleasure. The surface of your wood composite decking boards should be kept clean from the build up of residues at all times.

General cleaning with a broom or mop is suitable for most cleans, however for a more substantial clean dilute sugar soap into warm water and scrub the deck with a scrubbing brush After any cleaning of your Hybrideck hose off and use an old towel wrapped around your broom/brush to remove any excess water. This will assist in avoiding any temporary water staining marks occurring. On a warm day the deck should dry without any residual watermarks.

Mould and Mildew

If damp organic materials such as leaves and dust are allowed to build up on your wood composite deck or the deck is in a shaded damp site, mould or mildew may develop on the surface. This can be treated with diluted “wet & forget” following the manufacturers instructions. To get a faster result, Intergrain Reviver or similar oxalic acid based cleaner is another option.

Stains

Hybrideck plastic composite decking, like wood, is susceptible to stains from BBQ grease, oil, and the tannin in some vegetation. To clean your deck from any areas affected by these stains the best results are achieved if the stain is treated immediately with absorbent cloths, then apply a degreaser as per the manufacturers instructions. Follow up with a general clean with sugar soap and warm water.

Scratches

Scratches can be removed with a light sand using 80 – 100 grit sandpaper or brand new(clean) wire brush, following the grain of the wood. The colour and texture changes which occur after this will recede with weathering.

Weathering of composite decking boards

Initially the composite deck boards will appear to be leaching and waterstaining. This is a weathering process which takes around three months to settle down. To accelerate this process scrub the deck down with Intergrain Reviva. After the first summer the colour will have lightened up10% to 20% and then will remain stable. Being a recycled wood plastic product colour variation of up to 8% from board to board can be expected.

Protecting your composite decking

Your Hybrideck needs to be protected from fluid containing strong colourings and/or oils that could stain your Hybrideck. This is particularly important after the initial installation of your Hybrideck and before any of the weathering process occurs. Like all timber products you must still be careful for the life of the product.

If you are installing a barbecue on top of your Hybrideck we strongly recommend the use of a barbecue mat for any area that may potentially be affected.

Testing your wood composite decking

Test any treatment, cleaning products or sanding on a spare piece of Hybrideck or  a small obscured area of  your decking to check for changes first that may occur when applying new treatments. After any cleaning hose off and use an old towel wrapped around your deckscrub or a rubber scraper to remove the excess water. On a warm day the deck should dry with no water marks in a very short time.
